In today’s world there is so much pressure on us to live sustainably or “go green” so that our lifestyle has as little impact as possible on environmental issues like climate change. Understandably many people want to apply this philosophy to their homes but they may not understand how to do it or where to begin.

While converting your entire life to an eco-friendly one is a tall order for most people, there are plenty of small steps they can take to get started with. You’d be surprised how simple some of these methods are and that they can actually save you money in the long run.

Let’s take a look at the small ways in which you can make your home more eco-friendly.

Replace old lightbulbs

The incandescent lightbulbs that we all grew up with can actually waste up to 90% of their energy simply giving off heat. New style light bulbs like fluorescent and LED bulbs are much more energy efficient, produce less heat and will easily fit into most exiting lighting fixtures around you home.

Unplug devices from the wall

While most of us simply think turning off the iron or the kettle stops it from using power, they are actually still drawing a current when plugged into the wall socket. Plugging everything into a breakout strip is useful as you can turn off the whole strip at once, saving power with all appliances.

Turn kitchen scraps into compost

A great deal of the food scraps we go through on a weekly basis can be converted into highly effective compost. Everything from fruit and vegetable skins, eggshells, coffee grinds and even napkins can be turned into compost.

Not only is this compost great for your garden, it helps to reduce the amount that ends up in landfill as well as keeping your bins less full.

Use cold water in the laundry

A large portion of energy used by washing machines comes from heating water. Using the cold-wash or eco-wash option with a special cold-wash detergent is much less wasteful and delivers the same clean clothes.

Air dry clothes instead of using dryer

Obviously it’s more eco-friendly to let your clothes dry on a clothesline than to put them through a drying machine. If you have a dryer its best to only use it when it’s raining and you need specific clothes dried.

Use less water

Don’t leave the tap running while cleaning your teeth and don’t take baths every single day. Even daily showers are considered unnecessary by some experts and it can actually be healthier to let natural oils sit on your skin and hair for longer.

Whatever it takes, there are plenty of easy ways to live more eco-friendly lives in our homes.
